Origin/meaning
The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the town, dating from the early 14th century. The figure is most likely Botho von Kärnten, Counts of the Palatinate and builder of the local castle in 1084. In 1108 the castle was acquired by the Bishops of Bamberg, who ruled the town until 1803. The small shield shows the lion of the State of Bamberg.
In the 19th century the knight was shown as a well-dressed civilian, but the old composition was restored in 1836.
