Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on January 14, 1819.

The oldest known seal of the city dates from the 13th century and shows only a hand holding a mitre. The second seal shows the images as in the present arms, a bishop standing on a city gate. At first the bishop was sitting, since 1569 he is standing. The city belonged to the Bishops of Salzburg. In some pictures of the arms the bishop was replaced by an oridinary man. Until 1819 the colour of the field was red, in 1819 the city was transferred from Salzburg to Bayern and the red colour was replaced by the Bavarian blue. Between 1819-1836 the bishop was placed under a sun, but this was not continued afterwards.
