Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on October 20, 1819 and again on May 29, 1838 and July 3, 1978. On January 28, 1980 the arms were slightly changed again.

The arms are those of Boudewijn II, Knight of Izegem, from 1238. His arms show a cross and 12 merles, placed as a bordure. The colours are known since the 14th century. Even though the Estate of Izegem was inherited and owned by a number of families, the arms remained the same.

In 1582 the estate became a County and the local seal now showed the arms with a crown of a Belgian Count.

In 1819 the arms were granted with a normal city crown and the merles were placed 2 and 1 in each quarter. After the Belgian independence the arms were confirmed and in 1878 regranted after the merger with Kachtem. Only in 1980 the historical arms were granted.
