Origin/meaning

Belgern received city rights around 1300 from the Counts of Meissen. The oldest seal dates from 1604 and shows a church. As supporters a knight and angel are used, holding a horn between them above the shield. Later the horn was placed in the shield and the supporters are no longer used. A small seal from 1709, however, only shows a horn. The knight and horn are taken from the Legend of Roland. The angel was a protector of the city.

When the arms were changed to the present arms, I do not know. The previous arms are shown below:
