Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on November 1, 1976.

The castle in the upper part symbolises the fortifications to the city, and are canting (Burg=castle). The lower part shows the antler of a reindeer. It symbolises the prehistoric findings in the nearby Stellmoor marshes. Reindeer lived in the area around the Ice ages, and as many antlers have been found, it is obvious that the area was settled already in 8500 BC.

The colours are derived from the colours of the Duchy of Holstein, to which the city historically belonged.

The previous arms were granted on February 28, 1938 and are based on the same elements.
