Origin/meaning

The village was the seat of a local court an became a city in 1887. The seals of the court are known since 1619 and the present arms (granted in 1954) are based on the oldest seal.

The lion in the upper part is most likely the lion of the counts of Katzenelnbogen, as the village was part of the county. The horse-shoes are probably the oldest village sign. Horse-shoes were commonly used as village signs. The combination of the lion with some local sign was very common in the county Katzenelnbogen. The arms thus are based on an old tradition.
