These arms show in the upper half the arms of the Tambov Province, in which the town was situated at the time. The lower half shows three bags of wheat, indicating the importance of wheat growing and trade for the town.

In 1861 a proposal for new arms was made:

In this proposal the bag of wheat and two wheatears again symbolise the wheat trade. The provincial arms are now shown as a free canton. The arms were never adopted.

New arms were granted on December 8, 1970.

The blue point indicates the location of the city at the confluence of 2 rivers - the Vorona and Khopyor. The 3 oak leaves with 2 acorns symbolize the Borisoglebsky forest with its powerful unique oak forests. The color scheme of the coat of arms was similar to the flag of the RSFSR - red with blue - and symbolized that the city belonged to Russia.

The arms were slightle changed by the city council and approved on December 25, 2004.

The symbolism of the previous arms remained, but now with in the base black lines to symbolise the fertile earth.

These arms were not recognised by the Russian Heraldic Authority, as they did not confirm to heraldic colour rules. Hence a new design was made (shown above), which keeps the same symbolism, but now with a golden point.
