742ND MISSILE SQUADRON, US AIR FORCE

History: Constituted as 742 Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) on 14 May 1943. Activated on 1 June 1943. Redesignated as 742 Bombardment Squadron, Heavy, on 6 March 1944. Inactivated on 9 September 1945. Redesignated as 742 Bombardment Squadron, Very Heavy, on 13 August 1947. Activated in the Reserve on 9 September 1947. Inactivated on 27 June 1949. Redesignated as 742 Fighter-Day Squadron on 7 May 1956. Activated on 25 July 1956. Inactivated on 1 July 1957. Redesignated as 742 Strategic Missile Squadron (ICBM-Minuteman), and activated, on 18 July 1962. Organized on 1 January 1963. Redesignated as 742 Missile Squadron on 1 September 1991. Combat in Mediterranean Theater of Operations (MTO) and European Theater of Operations (ETO) during World War II. Not operational, 1956-1957. Missile alert operations, 1963-1991. Maintained strategic missiles for possible use, 1991-.
