WILLIAM ALOYSIUS O'CONNOR

Born : December 27, 1903
Deceased : November 14, 1983

Bishop of Springfield in Illinois, 1949-1975

Arms (crest) of William Aloysius O'Connor

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

A golden oak tree, represents the Irish clan of O'Connor and thus the family name of the bishop. The tree stands on a red field, the liturgical color of charity and the humanity of the Lord and it refers to Bishop O'Connor's long-standing association with Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Above the oak tree is a blue star, which honors St. William, abbot of Monte Vergine, the baptismal patron of the bishop.

Bishop O'Connor's motto is "praesidium nobis Deus" (God is our support).
