Parted per pale: on the dexter, parted per fess Gules and Argent, in chief three cinquefoils two and one Ermine, and in base a lymphad sails furled Sable, flagged of the First; and in the sinister, Or, a fess chequy Azure and Argent.
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on July 8, 1927.
The arms show in the first quarter the three cinquefoils of the Clan Hamilton. James, 2nd Lord Hamilton was made Earl of Arran in 1503, Arran being part of the county. The ship is taken from the arms of the 12th century local leader Somerled, he himself did not have arms, but he used a ship to indicate his power over the seas. His descendants started to use the ship as part of their arms. The family had a stronghold on the Isle of Bute. The chequered bar is taken from the arms of the Clan Stewart, as the second Earl of Annan was from this family.
