In Gold ein rot gekrönter und golden bewehrter schwarzer Doppeladler, der rechts einen roten Reichsapfel mit goldenem Kreuz, links ein rotes Schwert hält; darüber schwebend ein rot gefütterter Kurfürstenhut mit Hermelinbesatz, goldenen Bügeln, Reichsapfel und Kreuz.

Origin/meaning

The arms were adopted on September 2, 1953.

The arms are based on old 18^th century seals of the town. The eagle obviously is the Imperial Eagle, and was probably taken as a symbol in the 18^th century for the 12^th century Imperial Estate, from which the town developed. To the eagle a Royal crown was added for the Prince-Bishops of Mainz, who ruled the area until 1803.
