Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1925.

Rezekne is in the heart of the Latgale region. In 1285 Germans built a castle Rositten here, replacing the old Latgali settlement. The town is mentioned in the 16th century.
In 1773 the Russian Empress Catherine II granted city rights and arms to Rezekne, called then Rezhitsa in Russian. The arms were taken from Polotsk]] and were similar to the Ludza arms, only the backgrounds were different.
