Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The personal coat of arms of Bishop Shehan were adopted in 1945 when he was consecrated auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore.

The Shehan family of Ireland bears a silver dove on a green mound, holding a green olive branch in its beak in reference to the Gaelic derivation of the name which means "peace." It is interesting to note that Pope Pius XII also bears a dove on his arms because of the derivation of his family name, Pacelli - "peace."

The motto means Follow after Charity and is from the first Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians, chapter 14, verse 1.
