ABERNETHY (Community Council)

Incorporated into : 1975 Perth and Kinross District Council (1996 Perth and Kinross Area Council)

Arms (crest) of Abernethy

Official blazon

Parted per chevron and in chief per pale 1st Azure, a salmon ontournee and embowed Argent, 2nd Argent a raspberry fruit Gules with bract Vert, in base Vert a representation of Abernethy Tower Argent masoned and windowed Sable, port of the Last; overall a chevron wavy per pale Argent and Azure charged with two barrulets counterchanged.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on January 17, 1991.

The former Burgh of Abernethy never had official arms, the above arms were newly designed. The upper half shows a fish and a raspberry, the lower half the local Pictish tower, which was already used on the seal of the Burgh designed in 1892.

The tower has been attributed as built by the Picts, it is a hollow tower with no roof. Most likely it was built in medieval times, not by the Picts, but the history is not clear.
