Official blazon
Distinctive Unit Insignia. Description: A gold color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02cm) in height overall consisting of a white enamel stylized cloud formation behind two gold missiles saltirewise, with points upward, charged with a maroon enamel Greek cross bordered gold, all between at the top a maroon enamel scroll inscribed "COMPETENCE" and in base a maroon enamel scroll inscribed "COMPASSION" all in gold letters.
Origin/meaning
The cross, symbolic of aid and assistance on the scarlet disc simulating a "redstone", symbolizes the U.S. Army Medical Department Activity at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. The cloud formation with the stylized rockets also represents Redstone as the home of the Army missile program. The saltire positioning of the missiles was suggested by the saltire on the Alabama State Flag. Maroon and white are colors used by the Medical Department.
The Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the U.S. Army Hospital, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama on 17 June 1970. It was redesignated for the U.S. Army Medical Department Activity, Redstone Arsenal on 26 September 1973.
