Origin/meaning
Introduced in the 19th century.
The prospector, a “Fifty-Niner,” on the county seal was one of many to come to Colorado during the Pike’s Peak gold rush; placer gold was found in Colorado Gulch in Lake County. Over the next 18 years, territory split off into seven counties. For two days in 1879, Lake County was renamed Carbonate County.
