Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on June 8, 1951.

The oldest known image of the arms dates from 1561, but it is probably granted during the reign of Prince-Abbot Sebastian of Breitenstein.

The arms show in the first and fourth quarter the colours of the County of Kempten. The castle probably represents the Neuenburg castle, which was acquired by the Counts of Kempten in 1415 and which was used as a prison during the wars of 1525-1526. The brook in the fourth quarter is canting (from Dur-Bach=stream).
