Origin/meaning

The new arms were granted in 1976 and combined the old arms with part of the arms of Westerholt.

The old arms were granted in 1936 together with the city rights.

Wappen von Herten (Recklinghausen)/Arms of Herten (Recklinghausen)

The arms are based on the arms of the Lords of Herten. The family is first mentioned in the 13th century and around their estate a village developed. In the middle of the 19th century the village started to grow rapidly due to industrialisation.
