Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on

Schlüchtern received city rights around 1560 from the Counts of Hanau. The oldest seal also dates from the same time. The seal showed the local patron saint, Archangel St. Michael with a sword and scales. Due to misinterpretation of the composition, the figure gradually changed into a female figure, the figure of Justice. Since the late 17th century all images and seals have shown the Lady of Justice.
