Origin/meaning

The upper half shows the arms of the diocese, with the addition of three stars, taken from the arms of the city of Rheine, where the bishop was born. The heart is the symbol for St, Mary, the rose for St. Elisabeth. The red colour refers to St. Christophorus, the patron saint of the bishop, whereas blue is the colour of Mary.
