Origin/meaning
The bishop used the historical family arms of the Eyre family. On pastoral letters he impaled his arms with the (then) assumed arms for the Archdiocese of Glasgow, as seen above. Below the shield the fish and ring taken from the arms of Glasgow.
He also used the arms with the cross of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jeru alem, of Rhodes and of Malta; Archbishop Eyre was a founder member in 1875 of the British Association of members of the Order.
