Origin/meaning

The bow and quiver are taken from the arms of a Maloney family from Ireland and symbolise here the last name of the bishop. The crown and the word Humilitas are derived from the arms of St. Charles Borromeo, the baptismal patron of Bishop Maloney.

The diagonal lines are an adaptation from the arms of a certain Shea family of Ireland, representing the last name of the bishop's mother.

Each of the three fleurs-de-lis on the band have a special significance. The first fleurs-de-lys represents Bishop Maloney's native city of Louisville, which was named after Louis XVI of France. The fleurs-de-lis on the flag of the City of Louisville were taken from the French royal coat of arms. The second fleurs-de-liys is for patronage to Archbishop John Alexander Floersh, whom Bishop Maloney will serve as Auxiliary. The third fleur-de-lys is again from the arms of the same Shea family.

Beneath the shield is the motto of Bishop Maloney, "Toto Corde": With the Whole Heart.
