Origin/meaning
The arms were granted in 1952 and combine the imperial eagle and the wheel of Mainz.
Thee oldest seals of the city are known since 1267.
The oldest two seals both show a crowned imperial eagle, the third shows a king on a throne. The three seals indicate that the city was a direct imperial possession (Reichsstadt). In 1309 the city became a possession of the Archbishops of Mainz, and the next seal showed the archbishop on a throne, with in the upper part the wheel of the State of Mainz. All later seals until the late 19th century show the wheel of the State of Mainz combined with a monogram woth the letters SL for the name of the city, see image below.
