Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The raven alludes to the Benedictine education of Archbishop Gregory at Sant Anselmo in Rome. The bear is from the arms of Joseph Louis Bernardin, the main celebrant at the consecration of the Archbishop. The fleur-de-lys is from the arms of the Mundelein Seminary where the Archbishop studied and taught.

The phoenix alludes to Chicago, and the Rebuilding of the city after the devastating fire in 1871. The cross symbolising Christian Faith is in the Afroamerican colours, symbolising the African roots of Archbishop Gregory.
