Origin/meaning
Mgr. Hebda has a Polish heritage, which is shown by the canting elderberry tree (Sambucus ebulus, bez hebd in Polish), which grows in Southeastern Poland from which Hebda´s paternal grandparents emigrated.
Over the elderberry tree is a blue 8-pointed star, the shining symbol of Mary. Bisholp Hebda placed his pastoral ministry under her protection and it also recalls the Monastery at Hebdow in Poland.
The checky bar is taken from the arms of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, where bishop Hebda has his roots. The background is gold, the most noble metal and symbolic to primary virtue.
The motto ONLY JESUS (MARC. 9:8) is accentuated in a prayer of cardinal Newman, much admired by bishop Hebda.
In his arms as Bishop of Gaylord the arms are paled with the arms of the Diocese of Gaylord. As co-adjutor he only used his personal arms; as archbishop he paled his arms with the arms of the Archdiocese.
In all cases the arms are surrounded by the attributes of a bishop or archbishop.
