Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The arms are quartered by a cross, a Christian symbol. The hand symbolises the bishop's power and authority. The dove symbolises the Holy Spirit. The fleur-de-lys symbolises four things; St. Mary, St. Aloysius, the Trinity and the Archdiocese of Dubuque.
The lion in the lower quarter symbolises St. Edward, the patron saint of the bishop.
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
