Origin/meaning

Burg was one of the major cities of the counts of Berg, who granted certain freedom rights in 1436, but Burg did not become a city until 1825. The lion in the arms is the lion of Berg. The arms are based on a 16th century seal. The original seal is known from 1556 and shows in the upper half the lion, and in the lower a fish. The seal was still used in 1607, but later in the 17th century the fish was replaced by the wheel. The wheel represents the old water mill in the Wupper. The colours of the lower part were in the 19th century black on gold (see below), but were changed in the 1960s.
