Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on May 28, 1938.
The red cross in silver field are derived from the ancient SOCIETAS SANCTI PROSPERI POPULI REGII ET ARTIUM CIVITAS REGII (St.Prospero's Society of Reggio Citizens and Corporations); St. Prospero, the first bishop of the city, is today the saint patron. Through this institution the citizens and the Corporations participated in ruling the Free Commune and they imposed their seal. Towards the end of 17th century the cartouche with the motto "PACE BELLOQUE FIDELIS" was added. In the same period the acronym SPQR came into use indicating the SENATUS POPULUSQUE REGIANORUM.
