Origin/meaning

The arms are canting, showing a red castle (Rothenburg = red castle). The arms are rather old and are first mentioned in 1260. All seals and most pictures of the arms through the centuries all show a red castle. The shape of the castle changes with the time and is shown according to the style of the time. Only in the 16th and 17th century the imperial eagle was also used in arms for the city.
