VIANDEN

Vianden.jpg

Origin/meaning

The arms of Vianden are among the oldest in Luxembourg. The oldest known arms of Counts of Vianden date from the 13th century and show a shield of red, with a silver bordure. In 1288 Godefroid 1st adopted new arms, based on the arms of the Perweys family, as his mother was a descendant of the Perweys family (who were related to the Dukes of Brabant). The Perweys arms are identical to the arms of Vianden.

The city has always used the same arms, which were first officially granted in 1696 by the French King, and later in the early 19th century by the Dutch King.
