Official blazon
Origin/meaning
The three wheatears indicate the importance of agriculture for the municipality. The tools are a hoe, as the name Astert-Asterode refers to clearing of the forest (roden). The hammer is a typical hammer used by roof slate workers, as slate was quarried in the area.
The blue colour refers to the Counts of Nassau as the are belonged to Nassau from 1806-1866. The red is taken from the arms of the County Sayn and Sayn-Hachenburg, to which the area belonged until 1799.
The wavy bend refers to the Große Nister, a small river that flows through the municipality.
