Arms (crest) of Brno

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms of Brno show four bars, red and silver. The oldest known seal of the city, dating from the 13th century, shows a city wall, with between the towers of the gate a small shield with the above arms. On February 3, 1645 the arms as shown below were granted by Emperor Frederik III of Austria. The arms show a shield with the Imperial eagle, with old arms on its breast. Above the head of the eagle the initials of the Emperor. These arms have been in use until the early half of the 20th century, when the eagle was removed.
