Arms (crest) of Czaplinek

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The origin of the arms is not quite clear. It has been speculated that the arms are derived from the Polish Grzymala family. The oldest use of the arms with a tower and a bird dates from 1600, on the oldest known seal of the city. The bird, however, was shown more like a goose. Only later the bird changed into a heron or a stork as in the present arms. The arms have not significantly changed since, only slightly in he colours and in the size and shape of the bird.
