Shield: Azure (Oriental Blue), above a base rayonné Argent, a winged sphinx couchant of the last and in chief two plates partially superimposed fesswise the conjoined area Sable.
Crest: From a wreath Argent and Azure (Oriental Blue), a demi-dragon Gules charged on the shoulder with a cross paty Or grasping in dexter claws a scimitar of the like and in sinster claws a demi-rose Argent.
Motto: Vigilantia ad finem (Vigilance to the End)
Distingtive Unit Insignia Description: A Silver metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Azure (Oriental Blue), above a base rayonné Argent, a winged sphinx couchant of the last and in chief two plates partially superimposed fesswise the conjoined area Sable. Attached below the shield a Silver scroll inscribed "VIGILANTIA AD FINEM" in Black letters.
Origin/meaning
Orinetal blue and silver gray are the colours of Military Intelligence. The winged Sphinx refers to the Battalion's Air Reconnaissance Support Mission. The overlapping discs symbolise Camera Lenses and allude to the stereoscopic capabilities provided by the Battalion in its perfomance of reproduction, identification and packaging of aerial imagery. The flames are indicative of heat sensor devices, wisdom and zeal. The Demi-Dragon symbolises Vietnam Service and the Cross refers to the Award of the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm. Campaigns in Defence of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are symbolises by the Scimitar. The Rose symbolises "Sub Rosa" = Under the Rose an old symbol for secrecy.
The arms were approved on 13 February 1967, it was amended to include a Crest on 7 January 1997. The Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 11 May 1967.
