5TH AVIATION REGIMENT, US ARMY

Coat of arms (crest) of the 5th Aviation Regiment, US Army

Official blazon

Shield: Azure, issuing in fess point a pair of stylized wings displayed argent and over all a fleam abased tenné fimbriated of the second.
Crest: On a wreath of the colours, argent and azure, a hawk's head erased proper gorged by a collar azure, rims studded or and charged with a fleur-de-lys gold.
Motto: Acute and Alert.

Origin/meaning

The Wings symbolises Aviation. the Fleam, an heraldic lancet, represents the combat activities of the Unit as a reconnaissance troop during World War II. The Regiment originated as the 5th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop raised in 1940, becoming a Aviation Unit in 1962. The form of the Fleam also alludes to the number five. The Crest also alludes to service as a Reconnaissance Troop, the Fleur-de-Lys symbolising the Normandy Campaign during World War II.
