BERNARD JOSEPH MAHONEY

Born : July 24, 1875
Deceased : March 20, 1939

Bishop of Sioux Falls, 1922-1939

Arms (crest) of Bernard Joseph Mahoney

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The personal half shows elements from Irish family arms to symbolise the last name of the bishop (the blue lion on gold from a Mahoney family) and of his mother (oak leaf from an O'Connell family). The lion holds an heraldic fountain that symbolizes his name Patron, St. Bernard of Clairvaux whose family were Lords of Fontaines.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
