Origin/meaning

The eagle in the arms is most likely the symbol of St. John, the symbol used by the Bishops of Posen. The way the eagle is shown is not like a normal heraldic eagle, but like an eagle of St. John. The eagle normally holds a ribbon with a religious quote in its fangs, but this is not seen in the arms of the city. It is likely that originally the ribbon was present, but no old seals of the city exist. The oldest seal dates from the 17th century and already shows the eagle without ribbon. All later seals use the same arms.
