Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on March 15, 1966 and confirmed on June 6, 1995.

The arms are derived from the arms of the Bournonville family. The family had already many possessions in the area since the Middle Ages. In the 17th century the Counts of Bournonville were promoted to Princes. The principality of Buggenhout existed until 1793. In 1966 the arms of the Princes were adopted as arms for the municipality.
