Origin/meaning
The picks and shovels symbolise the historical significance of mining to the region. The bales of wool symbolisecommerce and industry. The sugar cane refers to agriculture.
The foliage depicts the region’s diverse range of flora, the wavy bar symbolises the city’s close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef.
The sun refers to the tropics
Previously the city used arms from about 1899 to 1995. These arms were quartered and showed the same elements as in the lower part of the current arms: sugar cane; bales representing commerce; pick & shovel for gold mining; and ingots of base metals.
