Official blazon

Arms: Per fesse Azure and Argent in chief a Naval Crown encircled by two Branches of Oak in saltire slipped Or and in base a Ship in frame proper.
Crest: On a Naval Crown Or an Anchor between two Dolphins haurient heads downwards and respecting each other proper; Mantled Azure doubled Argent.
Motto: Prorsum semper honeste

Origin/meaning

The arms are granted on November 6, 1876 and are appropriate for a naval port and ship-building centre. The upper part shows a naval crown, the lower represents the shipyards. The crest shows a naval crown, anchor and two dolphins. The motto 'Prorsum semper honeste' means 'Ever forward in uprightness'.
