Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

For his personal arms Archbishop Furey employs the heraldic symbols from Furey and O’Donnell family devices to honor the heritage of his parents, John Francis and Anna (O'Donnell) Furey. The blue background and three silver crescents are adapted from a Furey family device. The hand holding the Cross is adapted from a O’Donnell family device. The number of crescents also represents the Archbishop’s devotion to the Holy Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

For his episcopal motto, Archbishop Furey has adopted the phrase, “IPSAM SEQUENS NON DEVIAS”, translated from Latin to mean, “IF YOU FOLLOW HER, YOU WILL NOT STRAY.”
