The arms as an auxiliary bishop show the cross of the Archdiocese of Paderborn and the canting arms of the Hensbach family; a stallion (Hengst) over a brook (Bach).  The base is taken from the (old, pre 1975) arms of the city of [[Herne (Ruhr)|Herne]], where he worked from 1937-1946.

As Bishop of Essen and Cardinal his arms were changed. The shield now shows the arms of the Diocese of Essen and a simplified stallion (no longer the wavy bar) and for Herne and the Ruhr area in general, the crossed mining tools.
