Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on May 9, 1952 and confirmed on January 14, 1980.

The upper part of the arms symbolises the organisation of the district and, at the same time the so-called Fachwerk-houses in the area. Fachwerk is a typical style, where the large wooden beams are visible on the outside and the walls in between are plastered white.

The cross in the lower half is a Tau- or St. Anthony's cross, and is taken from the arms of the University of Giessen, that uses the cross already since 1607.
