Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

As coadjutor Mgr. Newell used more elaborate personal arms, showing in the lower half the symbols of his two patron saints, St. Hubertis (deer) and St. Michael (crosses). The blue chief, crescent and fleur-de-lys are symbols of St. Mary, the patron saint of Cheyenne.

The motto means 'Under Mary's guidance'.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
