Per pale; Vert, a lion rampant argent; per pale argent and gules, a lion rampant countercharged; on a chief wavy over both impalements argent an escallop gules, between two shamrocks vert.

Origin/meaning

The two lions are taken from the arms of an Irish Mahoney family to symbolise the name of the bishop. The colours have been changed to differentiate the arms of the bishop from the family arms. A lion can also be seen in the arms of an Irish Daly family and thus may also represent the family name of his mother. A lion is also part of the arms of Terence James Cooke, to whom the bishop served as an auxiliary.

The chief symbolises water and refers to the Hudson River on which Kingston , the city in which the Bishop was born, is located. The escallop shell is the symbol of the Bishop's baptismal patron, St. James the Greater. One of the shamrocks is a token of esteem for St. Patrick as the Bishop's middle-name patron, and the other honors him as the patron of the Archdiocese and the cathedral in which the Bishop was ordained.

The Bishop's motto "To be rich in Faith" is taken from this passage of the Epistle of St. James: "Listen, dear brothers. Did not God choose those who are poor in the e,yes of the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom He promised to those who love him?" (James 2 :5)
