Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The red eagle on the personal side is the symbol of Saint John, Bishop John’s baptismal patron and his religious patron. Below the eagle is a black Tau cross, emblematic of Saint Francis of Assisi, founder of His Excellency’s community, the Order of Friars Minor and it is in black because that is a dominant color of the habit of the Conventual Franciscan. Upon the tau is a green “Mary’s Key,” that can be seen hanging from the belt of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in her title of “Our Lady of Consolation,” whose national shrine Bishop Stowe was rector at the time of his appointment to become a bishop.
For his motto, Bishop Stowe has adopted the Latin phrase “ANNUNTIAMUS VERBUM VITAE.” In this case, the Bishop expresses the Scriptural direction about the life in Christ, that it is He who “announces the words of life
