Origin/meaning
The two lions holding a hand are taken from the arms of an Irish Donnelly family and are used here to represent the family name of the bishop. The base symbolises the green earth and, together with the cross, represent the National Cemetery Conference of which he was President in 1854-1955. The cross is shaped as part of a Jerusalem Cross, as Jerusalem is mentioned in the common burial prayers.
The clasped hands refer to the bishop's 20 years of service in the Connecticut Board of Mediation and Arbitration. The fleur-de-lys is a symbol for the lily of St. Joseph, the patron saint of the bishop.
The motto also reflects his years in public service.
