Origin/meaning

The three purple discs in the arms refer to the Italian name of the bishop, which means plum tree; the discs thus resemble plums. The chevron symbolises a carpenter's square and thus St. Joseph the main patron saint of the bishop. The silver star refers to St. Mary, the second patron saint, together with the chevron it is more specifically Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

The ermine is taken from the arms of Francis Joseph Spellman, to whom he served as an auxiliary bishop.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
