• (cardinal) Geviert von Gold und Blau; in 1 und 4 der Freisinger Mohr mit rotem Kragen; in 2 und 3 geteilt durch einen silbernen Wellenbalken, begleitet oben von einer auffliegenden, golden-nimbierten silbernen Taube und unten von einer goldenen Krone mit einem Reif aus Kreuzor­namenten.

Origin/meaning

The arms as Bishop of Speyer show the cross of the Diocese of Speyer, with an additional crown for the Kingdom of Christ. In the lower half there are two doves, symbolising the holy spirit. They also represent truth and love, which is the motto of the bishop. The rock or mountain refers to the strength of Christianity in modern times, the flames represent eternal love.

When he was appointed Archbishop of MÚnchen-Freising he kept the personal arms and used this with the diocesan arms in a similar style as his predecessor, Michael von Faulhaber.

When he was elevated to Cardinal he used quartered arms with the diocesan arms in I and IV and in II and III a composition of the dove and the crown of Christ. The silver bar, represents water and baptism.
