Origin/meaning

The arms show the Virgin Mary, the local patron saint, sitting with her Child on a wall, representing the city of La Seu d'Urgell. The present day city developed around the Romanesque cathedral of Santa Maria (Catalan "seu" means "cathedral"), consecrated in 839, that has been the centre of Urgell bishopric.

These arms are not official, but widely used by the local council.
